Trail update

(9 November 2025) Some important points for you about the status of our trail network after this eventful weather …

Good news: both the Lake2Lake Trail and Upukerora Loop can now be used by walkers and cyclists, but we still caution care and there are some factors to be aware of.

Lake2Lake Trail
👉 Repair work to a 400m section near the Te Anau bird park will start on Monday 10 November
👉 This will take at least a week and could cause delays to trail users (appropriate signage will be up to alert you)

Upukerora Loop
👉 Several short sections of trail have been impacted by waves from the high lake; mainly the area from the rodeo grounds to past the Kaipo Road access way.
👉 We’ll do a walkover next week (the week of 10 November) so we can coordinate repair work, alongside SDC, and keep you informed.

So get out there and enjoy – but please be careful!

A huge thank you to our Trustee Alister Burgess, who has been doing daily inspections, and to Clare, our Trail Manager, for keeping operators informed.

(31 October 2025) Recent weather events in Te Anau have not been kind to parts of our trail network.

There appears to be considerable damage to areas of the trail, in particular from the Department of Conservation centre in Te Anau to Queens Reach.

This section will be closed until further notice.

Once the water levels lower, a thorough inspection will be carried out, followed by construction to repair the damaged sections.

If you would like to help out as part of our Trail Volunteer Army, there are areas of debris build-up, or work that can be carried out that is not contractor-specific. Please get in touch with Clare; phone 027 2000 473 or email admin@fiordlandtrails.nz.

Once we have working days planned we will make contact and put the Army to work!

Thank you.
