Fiordland Trails Trust

"Creating a buzzing outdoor recreational scene around Te Anau & Manapouri."

Formed in September 2007, The Fiordland Trails Trust was established to enable the provision of a high quality interconnected network of trails in and around Fiordland for non-motorised recreational activity.

DonateHalf Marathon 2021

Lake2Lake Trail – Te Anau to Manapouri

The Lake2Lake trail runs alongside Lake Te Anau and the East side of the Waiau river towards Lake Manapouri.

The total length to Manapouri will be 28km. The first 19km from Te Anau to Balloon Loop and last 4.7km from Manapouri to Supply Bay Road is now open for walkers, runners, cyclists and any other non-motorised transport (e-bikes welcome).

The trail is mostly 2.2-2.5m wide and is rated “Grade 2 Easy”.

The trail can be used in both directions or people can make a loop by returning on Golf Course Road or the Te Anau-Manapouri Highway.

A 41km loop can be created up Mt York Road and along Ramparts Road, past the lookout, returning to town via the Te Anau-Mossburn Highway.

Other Trails in the Area

The Trust has their own strategy which incorporates a recent study of the cycling opportunities in Fiordland, along with a broader list of projects that we hope to undertake in the coming years.
The current priority for the Trust is the Te Anau – Manapouri Lake2Lake Trail.

Visitor Centre to Ivon Wilson Recreation Reserve Walk

Easy walk and Bike Track

This is an easy walk to a pretty urban park in a peaceful setting, with a fishing lake for children and a mountain biking track.

Fiordland Trails Trust – Lake2Lake

Cycle Track

The Lake2Lake trail runs alongside Lake Te Anau and the East side of the Waiau river towards Lake Manapouri.

Te Anau to Te Anau Downs

This is our next project

Still very much in the conception stage, and in the process of applying for grants

Perenuka Mountain Bike Park

Mountain Biking Trails

Just 6km from Te Anau town centre on the corner of Sinclair Road there is a growing single track playground for mountain bikers.

Lake Monowai/Borland Road area

Mountain Bike Trail

If you like to get out there into the wilds, away from the crowds but still amongst stunning Fiordland scenery, then this area has lots of spots for you.

Hollyford Valley

Mountain Bike Gravel Road

The gravel road from the Hollyford Road turnoff to the road end (16 km) is a very scenic road following the Hollyford River.

The Trust is stoked to announce we have received funding from the government's Jobs for Nature fund which will support a 6km trail extension and lead to some massive conservation gains in the area. We are partnering with Lower Upukerora Restoration Group - LURG on this initiative which includes a significant programme of weed control, predator control and native plantings alongside the existing Lake 2 Lake trail and in the Upukerora River delta area as well as the (part-funded) trail extension which is subject to consents.

That little bit looks so enticing, can even smell the NZ bush, beautiful!!! 💕💕

Fantastic news guys 👏

The amazing team at GWD Toyota in Invercargill have very generously donated the Fiordland Trails Trust a 2016 Toyota RAV4 to use for the next three years. They even branded it up for us - how great does it look? Feeling very grateful and appreciative for the amazing community and partners who help the Trust with our work to develop and maintain multi-use trails in the area. Give us a toot or a wave if you see us 👋👋👋 Thank you so much GWD Toyota - you rock! ... See MoreSee Less

MEET THE TRUSTEES!

We are so lucky to have such a great group of people involved with the Fiordland Trails Trust. Today we meet Bob Crawford.

Joined Fiordland Trails Trust in: 2020

Why did you join the Trust?
After retirement to Te Anau I wanted to get involved with a community organisation. I enjoy biking and the outdoors, so when I was asked to be a trustee it seemed like a good fit for me. I was impressed by the current trustees and their passion and commitment to the Trails Trust.

What three words would you use to describe the Lake 2 Lake trail?
Scenic - no matter where you are on the trail, there is always an awe-inspiring vista just around the corner. Varied - the trail is Fiordland in a microcosm,.
Accessible - easy to get to from any point and suited to all age groups.

What do you love about the Lake 2 Lake trail?
As above!
It is full of so many changes of scenery from stunning views of the mountains, to wonderful river views and a new surprise around every corner. It is equally suited to both walkers and bikers of all ages and levels of fitness.

What do you love about Fiordland?
I have been fortunate to travel to many countries in my lifetime. In my opinion Fiordland offers so much in a relatively small area. It is untouched, pristine and truly my favourite part of the world. I am so lucky to live here.
