Fiordland Trails Trust

Creating a buzzing outdoor recreational scene around Te Anau & Manapouri.

Formed in September 2007, The Fiordland Trails Trust was established to enable the provision of a high quality interconnected network of trails in and around Fiordland for non-motorised recreational activity.

Lake2Lake Trail – Te Anau to Manapouri

The Lake2Lake trail runs alongside Lake Te Anau and the East side of the Waiau river towards Lake Manapouri.

The total length to Manapouri will be 28km. The first 19km from Te Anau to Balloon Loop and last 4.7km from Manapouri to Supply Bay Road is now open for walkers, runners, cyclists and any other non-motorised transport (e-bikes welcome).

The trail is mostly 2.2-2.5m wide and is rated “Grade 2 Easy”.

The trail can be used in both directions or people can make a loop by returning on Golf Course Road or the Te Anau-Manapouri Highway.

A 41km loop can be created up Mt York Road and along Ramparts Road, past the lookout, returning to town via the Te Anau-Mossburn Highway.

Other Trails in the Area

The Trust has their own strategy which incorporates a recent study of the cycling opportunities in Fiordland, along with a broader list of projects that we hope to undertake in the coming years.
The current priority for the Trust is the Te Anau – Manapouri Lake2Lake Trail.

If you like to get out there into the wilds, away from the crowds but still amongst stunning Fiordland scenery, then this area has lots of spots for you.

Hollyford Valley

Mountain Bike Gravel Road

The gravel road from the Hollyford Road turnoff to the road end (16 km) is a very scenic road following the Hollyford River.

Supporters may have received notification from Environment Southland that the resource consent hearing has been suspended at the request of the applicant (the Fiordland Trails Trust). In preparing evidence for our initial application (to lay the trail and install the two culverts), the Trust commissioned a hydrologist who suggested benefit in adding a third culvert to the 35m section of trail. The Trust is therefore applying for consent to install this third culvert.
Rather than spend time and money on two separate hearings, the Trust's lawyer asked that both applications be heard together. We think this approach will give us the best chance of having both consents granted with the least cost to the environment or the Trust. Our Planner is currently preparing the additional consenting documentation and we will advise when this is lodged. We are hopeful of a hearing pre Christmas.

Sounds like a good plan, keep up the good work on this challenging issue

Good luck team!

All the best you are doing great job

The Fiordland Trails Trust is very happy with the recent Meridian Hydro half marathon. Thanks to all those who supported it by participating and volunteering.

We are now having to focus on the upcoming Environment Southland hearing regarding resource consent for leg 6 (Supply Bay Road to Manapouri). The hearing will be held in the Real Journeys Fiordland Community Events Centre, 20-22 Luxmore Drive, Te Anau on Wednesday 18th September from 10am (not 9am as some will have been notified in a letter from ES dated 21 August). Thank you to all those who have submitted. The Trust has engaged a lawyer who will be presenting on behalf of the Trust. We intend to focus on the provisional Land and Water Plan and the low impact of the trail. We would welcome any supporters coming to listen but do not think it will help our cause to have too many speakers.

The Trust intends to hold its AGM on Tuesday 5th November by which time we anticipate knowing the outcome of the hearing. Venue to be confirmed.
