Fiordland Trails Trust

"Creating a buzzing outdoor recreational scene around Te Anau & Manapouri."

Formed in September 2007, The Fiordland Trails Trust was established to enable the provision of a high quality interconnected network of trails in and around Fiordland for non-motorised recreational activity.

DonateHalf Marathon 2021

Lake2Lake Trail – Te Anau to Manapouri

The Lake2Lake trail runs alongside Lake Te Anau and the East side of the Waiau river towards Lake Manapouri.

The total length to Manapouri will be 28km. The first 19km from Te Anau to Balloon Loop and last 4.7km from Manapouri to Supply Bay Road is now open for walkers, runners, cyclists and any other non-motorised transport (e-bikes welcome).

The trail is mostly 2.2-2.5m wide and is rated “Grade 2 Easy”.

The trail can be used in both directions or people can make a loop by returning on Golf Course Road or the Te Anau-Manapouri Highway.

A 41km loop can be created up Mt York Road and along Ramparts Road, past the lookout, returning to town via the Te Anau-Mossburn Highway.

Other Trails in the Area

The Trust has their own strategy which incorporates a recent study of the cycling opportunities in Fiordland, along with a broader list of projects that we hope to undertake in the coming years.
The current priority for the Trust is the Te Anau – Manapouri Lake2Lake Trail.

Visitor Centre to Ivon Wilson Recreation Reserve Walk

Easy walk and Bike Track

This is an easy walk to a pretty urban park in a peaceful setting, with a fishing lake for children and a mountain biking track.

Fiordland Trails Trust – Lake2Lake

Cycle Track

The Lake2Lake trail runs alongside Lake Te Anau and the East side of the Waiau river towards Lake Manapouri.

Te Anau to Te Anau Downs

This is our next project

Still very much in the conception stage, and in the process of applying for grants

Perenuka Mountain Bike Park

Mountain Biking Trails

Just 6km from Te Anau town centre on the corner of Sinclair Road there is a growing single track playground for mountain bikers.

Lake Monowai/Borland Road area

Mountain Bike Trail

If you like to get out there into the wilds, away from the crowds but still amongst stunning Fiordland scenery, then this area has lots of spots for you.

Hollyford Valley

Mountain Bike Gravel Road

The gravel road from the Hollyford Road turnoff to the road end (16 km) is a very scenic road following the Hollyford River.

MEET THE TRUSTEES!
The Fiordland Trails Trust is made up of some amazing people who all volunteer their time. Today we meet Alister Burgess.

Joined Fiordland Trails Trust in: I've been a trust member for approximately six years.

Why did you join the Trust?
I was approached by Dr Steven Hoskin, the chairman at the time to join the trust for the maintenance of the trail.

How would you use to describe the Lake 2 Lake trail?
To describe the trail I would say its a great asset to the community.

What do you love about the Lake 2 Lake trail?
Many people enjoy the scenic outlooks and the bush. I love the fact that the community have embraced the trail and are enjoying the walk or ride. I also love the fact I have no trouble getting volunteers to help with the maintenance of the trail eg. spraying of weeds and general maintenance.

What do you love about Fiordland?
What can't you love about Fiordland? The mountains, the lakes and the community. I've hunted and tramped Fiordland for the past 54 years and I hope I can continue to do this for sometime yet.

MEET THE TRUSTEES!
The Fiordland Trails Trust is made up of a wonderful group of volunteers who make things happen for our community. Today we meet one of our newest trustees, Marilyn.

Joined Fiordland Trails Trust in: April 2021

Why did you join the Trust?
To be honest because they needed a treasurer, but that aside I was honoured to be asked to become a Trustee as I had held an interest in what the Trails Trust was doing from the first time I rode the wonderful trail.

What three words would you use to describe the Lake 2 Lake trail?
Scenic and peaceful

What do you love about the Lake 2 Lake trail?
I have always enjoyed walking in the bush and now to be able to ride through such beautiful scenery as well is the ultimate.

What do you love about Fiordland?
I have had a long association with Fiordland from childhood boating holidays to the same with my own children. My father was very involved in the Save Manapouri campaign in 1970 and I am so grateful it was saved for us to still enjoy whether on a bike or in a boat. I feel very privileged to be able to spend my retirement in such a beautiful place as Fiordland.
